In the Algarve, meat dishes are quite opulent and also very tasty.

Frango Piri-Piri

Grilled chicken with Piri-Piri spice is one of the specialties of the Algarve. Piri-Piri is a spicy up to very hot sauce that many restaurants produce themselves. The town of Guia near Albufeira describes itself as the capital of this dish. However, this food is offered everywhere in the Algarve and is highly recommended, especially in the mountains of Monchique.

You will be able to get Piri-piri sauce in every supermarket, or on each market, in glasses or small bottles and in different degrees of heat.

Pigling

Grilled Leitão (pigling) can be found in every major supermarket as a freshly made take-away or packaged in a cold store. Away from the usual tourist trails, this dish is a really special treat. The meat is tender and juicy and the skin is crispy.

Wild Boar

In the hinterland is often Javali (wild boar) on the menu. Offered as a roast, or as shown on the picture, “no forno” (from the oven) with red wine sauce, potatoes and vegetables. The meat is then very tender and tasty.
