Igreja Matriz
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário

Coordinates: 37°01’34.3″N 7°50’26.9″W

The first stone laying for the church was on June 4, 1698. The fishermen and seafarers bore the construction costs exclusively. After the damages caused by the earth quake of 1755, the house of God has been rebuilt.

On the rear side of the church adjoins the Capela Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos. You can look into it thru grille. There, candles burn all the time, and votive offerings can be seen. The wives of the fishermen pray even today there when those are fishing.

The interior of the house of God appears sumptuous, but somewhat gloomy. One can climb the belfry, presenting a beautiful sight over the town, for a fee of 1 €.

The church can be visited from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 to 13 h and from 15 to 17 h. The entrance is free.
