Police – Policia

The emergency call is 112

In Portugal are two police departments, which are relevant for tourists.

1. The GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) in white Skodas with green stripes or in green Nissan SUVs with darkgreen stripes.

2. The PSP (Policia de Segurança Publica) in white Skodas with blue stripes.

On the occasion of traffic checks Portuguese or English is spoken usually. 

Keep the papers of the car renting company and your driving license ready. 

When driving your own car or caravan you are obliged to show your green security card. Maybe the police will ask for your personal documentation.

Police officers in Portugal have a large margin of discretion. Always keep friendly and insightful.


Fire brigade – Bombeiros

The vehicles of the Portuguese fire brigade are red. When you hear the sirene, give way immediately. The sirenes have two different sounds (normal siren and howler) and are both applied in a mixed way.


Ambulance – Ambulância

Ambulances in Portugal are yellow with blue stripes. As soon as you hear the sirene give way immediately if at all possible. The sirenes have two different sounds (normal siren and howler) and are both applied in a mixed way. In case both sirenes are not respected, a very loud bass horn will be applied additionally.
