The community and the village (about 800 inhabitants) is located in the western mountains of Monchique, fairly halfway between Aljezur in the West and the county town of Monchique in the East.

According to a legend the village has been founded by shipwrecked seamen who, during the first period, mainly lived off fishing and goat milk. Mar (sea) e (and) Leite (milk). The name has been modified in the course of time.
