In the Palácio da Galeria a part of the municipal museum of Tavira is housed.

The mere palace is worth a visit. In one part of the museum it is shown how people worked on the sea and in the country side. 


Another part of the museum presents changing exhibitions with contemporary art.

Opening hours: 9 to 13 h and 14 to 17 h.

The entrance fee is:
Adults: 2 Euros
Students, adolescents and seniors: 1 Euro
Children up to 8 years: free

A ticket combinated with the Núcleo Islâmico costs 3 Euros.

Núcleo Islâmico

Parts of the old city wall or the old castle, respectively, have been surrounded by the walls of the museum. In the museum an 8-minute-movie (Portuguese with English subtitles) is shown about how the Moors lived in Tavira.

Many daily and interesting finds are exposed. A lot of explanations can be read at least in English (apart from Portuguese) in a folder which is handed out to you at the reception.


A special find and exhibited item is this gargoyle.

On the 2nd floor a temporary exhibition regarding Jordan and the Rose City Petra can be seen.

The Moors made studs, needles, musical instruments and other needful things from bones.
