Wax museum
of Portuguese discoveries

The wax museum in Lagos exists since 2014, and it simulates the journeys and expeditions of the 14th and 15th century. 22 life-sized wax sculptures in 16 scenarios give you an understanding of an important and interesting part of Portuguese history.

The exposition starts with the stepwise circumnavigation of Africa and ends with the arrival at several countries as well as with the related missionary work. It is shown how and from whom the discoveries have been made. At every scenario there are many written explanations (at the time in Portuguese and in English).

Forte da Ponta da Bandeira

The fort was built in the 17th century, and it protected the harbour as well as the mouth of the river Bensafrim against pirate attacks.

Coordinates: 37°05’56.5″N 8°40’06.7″W

Till the end of the 20th century the fort was used as deposit for the marine. Today it houses, beside the old chapel, a museum.


The chapel inside the fort is completely covered with Azulejos and is dedicated to Santa Barbara, patron saint of the artillerymen and miners.


In the museum you will see diverse types of ships and the maritime history of Portugal. Please do not miss out the view from the terrace (roof) over the bay, the mouth of the river and the city.
