The N125 runs through the town. The older part is situated northeast of it with the market, narrow alleys and the remarkable church. Diverse shops are located at the town’s exit toward west.

Mercado Municipal

The market in Alcantarilha is small and assessable. The freshness and the quality of the products are top.

Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição
Capela Dos Ossos

The church sits on a narrow street which you can reach from both roundabouts in town and which runs nearly parallel to the N125.

In the interior of the church is a richly decorated altar.

At the right side of the church, dating from the 16th century, you will find the chapel of bones (Capela Dos Ossos), the walls of which are covered with human skulls and thigh bones. The bones originate from the old cemetery that was abandoned at the time when the church was built.

The bones of hundreds of human beings create the wall cladding in the chapel.
