The colour of the post offices and postboxes (pillar boxes) in Portugal is red. Post offices are in the capitals of the municipalities and they are signposted.
Opening time: Monday to Friday, 8:30 h to 18 h.
Some of the post offices in smaller towns or villages have a lunch break from 12:30 h to 15 h.
Postage: The forwarding of postcards and letters up to 20g costs 0.55 € within Europe and 0.70 € to other countries.
You can mostly buy stamps also in tobacco shops, holiday resorts and hotels.
Banks / ATMs
Portugal disposes of a modern and progressive banking system. Transferences within Europe take 24 hours. Credit cards are accepted mostly everywhere, on payment you need the PIN code.
In Portugal ATMs are named Multibanco (MB). When inserting your card, the automate uses immediately the language of origin of the card. You cannot take more than 200 € as per transaction. The card can be used twice a day (according to your personal limit). ATMs can be found in all banks, supermarkets (at least at the big ones), holiday resorts and so on.
The use of ATMs in Portugal is free of charge as a rule. However, your own bank might charge you for the service. We therefore recommend you to ask your clerk for free cooperation banks already when planning the trip.
Internet – WiFi
In the pedestrian zones of the holiday spots there are points of free access to the mobile internet for your mobile phone, tablet or notebook. Many hotels, holiday resorts, supermarkets, shops, restaurants and cafés also offer free WiFi to their guests.
If you need or want to be online permanently, you can buy a prepaid card with reloadable credit in one of the many telephone shops so that you can use the mobile internet.
