Alte is a community (about 2,000 inhabitants) and a village in the county of Loulé. It lies in a fruitful landscape between the Serra de Monchique and the Serra do Caldeirao.

Coordinates: 37° 14′ N, 8° 11′ W

The N124 (Sao Bartolomeu de Messines – Salir) runs through the village.

Tip: Please park your car at the entrance of the village or on the signposted parking places near the wells. The heart of the village can then be reached within a few minutes’ walk.

The cosy place has kept its charm and tranquility, in spite of the many visitors, up to the 21st century.

There are museums, the post office, banks, restaurants, cafés and shops with handicraft as well as some ateliers in the village.

Small and narrow alleys go from slender streets to the backyards.

Even on the broader streets is only minimal activity.

The eastern and northeastern part of the village crosses a creek that also has its source here. Of the excitement from the beaches and the noise from the streets one hears and notices nothing at all.

Many things in and around Alte are “typical Algarve” and completely genuine.

The creek below the well is gladly used for bathing, and the lawn for sunbathing.

You can walk along the stream and watch the water birds.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção

The Igreja Matriz de Alte, or also called Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, was built in the 13th century.

After heavy earthquakes the house of God was restored in the 16th and 18th century.

Inside, the church is designed delightfully brightly and friendly.
